Underwear Inspection: Agree How the Waistband Is Measured

Keep relaxed garment measurements, stretch checks and before-and-after laundering records separate when reviewing an underwear order.

Underwear laid flat beside a measuring tape and a blank measurement record for illustration

A waistband measurement without a method would be an awkward result to receive in an underwear inspection report. I would want to know whether the garment was lying flat and relaxed, whether the elastic had been stretched, and which points had been used. A number could be quite carefully recorded and still refer to a different measurement from the one on the order. Before inspection, I would send the proposed measuring photograph to the supplier and ask them to mark any difference from the way they had prepared the size chart.

For boxer briefs, I would ask for a photograph showing the front and back of the waistband laid out for the relaxed-width reading. Where would the inspector place the end of the tape, and what would happen at the opposite side? I would want those positions marked on the drawing, together with the arrangement of the garment on the table. I would call the result a flat garment width in the record. If the supplier's chart gave a circumference or a recommended body waist instead, I would keep that description attached and ask for the equivalent garment measurement to be identified separately.

A stretched measurement would need its own method and its own result field. Pulling by hand until the band “looks fully stretched” would leave too much to the person taking the reading. I would ask the inspector which defined method and equipment were proposed, including the applied force or extension conditions where relevant. If elastic recovery was also to be assessed, that work would need specifying separately. I would keep those results apart from the relaxed width, so that one could not quietly replace the other in the report.

I would also ask for a photograph of the front-rise measurement on the chosen style. A shaped front panel, a fly or a seam could make a written instruction such as “measure down the front” ambiguous. The drawing would need to show the starting point at the waistband and the end point near the crotch, and whether the tape followed a seam or another defined path. I would ask for the back rise and the two leg openings to be shown in the same way. If the pattern changed, I would compare these marked photographs before assuming that a reading from the earlier style still described the revised one.

If laundering were included in the inspection, I would keep a photograph and the initial readings under each sample's own reference, with space alongside for the later readings. The CottonWorks course covers dimensional changes in the garment and changes involving its body fabric and trim. For these boxer briefs, I would record the waistband, body and leg openings separately, so that a waist reading did not stand in for the rest of the garment. The procedure would be agreed for the supplied care instructions and assessment purpose, involving a textile specialist where needed; I would record the wash, drying and measurement conditions with the readings.

I would send the supplier the actual readings for each sampled size, with the agreed tolerances and sampling plan identified in the report. If a result fell outside a limit, the next message would include the sample reference and the marked measuring photograph. Before considering a change to the chart, I would ask for a reply about that sample and how its reading had been taken. If it was measured again, I would put the second result beside the first one, with the corresponding photograph. We could then look at the garment's position and the tape path in both pictures when discussing why the figures differed.
